Federal data privacy crackdowns

Healthcare companies are facing new challenges as a series of federal data privacy crackdowns are making it more complicated for them to market their services online.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is leading the way in this new enforcement push by fining telehealth companies for violating their customers’ privacy and prohibiting them from doing so in the future.

The Director of HHS’ Office for Civil Rights has also launched an investigation, calling online health data collection “problematic” and “widespread.” The agency has sought to update health data privacy protections to prevent providers and insurers from releasing information about a patient seeking or obtaining a legal abortion.
