The City of San Bernardino has recently announced the appointment of Asusena “Suzie” Soren as its new Deputy City Manager. This significant move comes as Soren, previously the City’s Director of Human Resources, steps into a role overseeing critical departments, including Finance, Information Technology, Animal Services, Human Resources, and the Call Center.

A Key Player in the Executive Team

City Manager Charles Montoya expressed his enthusiasm for Soren's new role, highlighting her as an integral part of the City’s Executive Team. “Suzie Soren has proven to be an integral part of the City’s Executive Team, and I am happy to have her joining the City Manager’s Office,” said Montoya. “She will play a large role in strategically moving San Bernardino forward.”

Responsibilities and Oversight

The Deputy City Manager position is pivotal within the city's governance structure, involving specific activities within City operations and oversight of key departments. Soren’s appointment fills one of the two Deputy City Manager positions approved by the Mayor and City Council on December 6, 2023, with recruitment currently underway for the second position.

A Vision for Progress

“I am excited for the opportunity to continue serving the City of San Bernardino as Deputy City Manager,” said Soren. “Working with Charles Montoya the past few months has confirmed that our principles are aligned, and our vision for the City is shared.”

A Career of Service and Leadership

Soren brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having joined San Bernardino in 2021 as Human Resources Director after a distinguished fourteen-year tenure at the County of San Bernardino in Human Resources. Before her public sector service, Soren spent five years in the private sector, where she served as Labor Relations Coordinator for Stater Bros. Markets, overseeing 150 stores and 17,000 employees.

Educational Background

Educationally, Soren holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from California State University, San Bernardino, and a master’s in public administration from California Baptist University.

As San Bernardino continues its strategic growth and development, Soren’s appointment underscores the city’s commitment to effective leadership and efficient management of its resources. Her extensive experience and shared vision with City Manager Montoya are poised to drive San Bernardino toward a prosperous future.
